a new trend online. teens jumping off bridges, sometimes up to 100 feet in the air. and then, they post the videos online. we'll have some of these daredevils. right there. reminds me of cliff jumping off of acapulco. that can be very dangerous. we're going to talk about that. >> oh. >> we're going to show you what happens later. >> stay tuned to see how that ends. he's okay. let's get right to the severe weather that's been baking and drenching so much of the country. our sam has been tracking the latest. he's in central park right now for us. good morning, sam. >> good morning, robin. it feels better in places like central park. but a 137-year-old heat record slammed yesterday in washington, d.c. the earliest 100-degree temperature in atlanta city. unfortunately it takes big storms to break big heat. after days of brutal heat, this was the relief. a series of powerful, severe storms that tore across the east coast. toppling a steeple in north carolina. and tearing down trees. in new york, reporter darla

miles from station wabc could barely stand during her live shot. she was pushed over once. then again. >> if your apartment does not have -- >> reporter: the weather was so bad, a massive black eyed peas concert planned in central park last night, canceled. leaving tens of thousands disappointed. the storms touched off five days of record heat across the country. 99 in philadelphia. 102 in newark. and 102 in washington, d.c. temperatures that had not been seen since the 1800s. in the northeast, multiple school systems canceled classes, rather than endure the heat. and the beaches? absolutely packed. but the abnormally early heat left people unprepared. in bradley beach, new jersey, a boy went missing while swimming at this beach. there was no lifeguard on duty, it was so early in the season. little relief is expected today. bad news for the bonnaroo music festival in tennessee, where 80,000 people are expected to attend the outdoor concert. organizers are bringing in extra water to keep concertgoers hydrated.

>> we already saw one girl pass out from heat exhaustion on the way in here. it's crazy. you have to know how to keep yourself hydrated. >> if you're stuck in the heat, let me help you cool down with this picture. a snow pile in boston. you'll remember this. 81 inches of snow. that's twice the normal for the winter season. they had heavy equipment driving on top of it. even yesterday, after 90-degree heat, that pile is still 16 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. it may go into june or the tip of july, because it's getting isolated and coated by that little bit of dirt there. >> sam, just a reminder of the extreme weather we're having every, single season this year. thanks very much. we're going to turn to politics now. and the first, major shakeup of this presidential campaign. it is a doozy. the entire top command for newt gingrich's campaign, 16 people in all, up and quit yesterday.

the former speaker says he'll soldier on. but this is a staggering blow to a campaign that's been stumbling from the start. jake tapper joins us from washington. a lot of buzz behind the scenes about the wife, callista. >> reporter: senior staff walked out. calling it a newt-iny. not only because gingrich won't do what it takes to win. but his wife won't. behind in polls, with massive campaign debt, and two months before the iowa straw poll, last week, newt gingrich took his third wife on a week-long luxury cruise to the greek islands. also on the cruise, former model, twiggy. for the campaign staff, it was the last straw in what was a campaign already shaping up to be a greek tragedy. his entire senior staff resigned. the campaign manager, senior advisers in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina. and his devoted spokesman of a

dozen years, rick tyler, who told abc news, we had a fundamental difference of opinion about the direction of the campaign. specifically about whether newt's schedule would allow him the spend enough time in the states he needs to win. multiple sources complained that the candidate's wife had too much power in the campaign. one griping about her hair a appointments. and the campaign began to unravel after the story broke that the two has racked up to an up to $500,000 tab at tiffany's jewelry store. >> go talk to tiffany's. we're very frugal. >> reporter: but it's gingrich himself, who republicans grumble, has been undisciplined. he launched his campaign last month. >> i think this is going to be the happiest, most fun, and most positive campaign in my lifetime. >> reporter: and out of the starting gate, boom goes the dynamite. he attacked a house republican medicare plan, alienating grassroots republicans, like

this voter in iowa. >> why don't you get out now before you further embarrass yourself? >> reporter: only on the campaign trail for is the of the last 36 days, gingrich's lack of focus has been a constant source of frustration for his staff. gingrich will send out an e-mail to supporters this morning. saying, this will be your campaign. he wrote on a facebook post, the campaign begins anew, on sunday. and he plans to participate in a republican debate on monday. >> that's right. jake, a lot of talk yesterday about what this means for the other presidential campaigns. most of the others i spoke with said it's not going to have much of an impact. but it could have one on the potential campaign of the texas governor, rick perry. he's been playing footsie with running. and two of newt gingrich's staff that quit were the top command for perry in his gubernatorial runs. >> reporter: that's right, george. the campaign manager for gingrich was rick perry's campaign manager. this adds to the intrigue. a lot of people wondering whether those two individuals who quit gingrich's campaign were abandoning ship or merely jumping ship.

>> and one operative i talked to in texas said this dramatically increases the chance that perry will run. another major development yesterday. mitt romney, the front-runner in the presidential campaign, says he's not going to compete in the iowa straw poll in august. and this is significant. >> reporter: it is significant. the straw poll is a big event for party activists in iowa. a few points to make on this. one, romney won that event last time. but he lost the iowa caucus. two, he wants to emphasize the new hampshire primary. and, three, this does raise expectations for former minnesota governor, tim pawlenty. george? >> thanks very much. robin, another development today. later today in alaska, 24,000 e-mails from sarah palin's time as governor are going to be released. >> 24,000. we'll have to wait and see what they say. all right, george. now, for the latest on the anthony weiner scandal. the big guessing game is whether he will give in to the growing pressure for him to resign. our jonathan karl has been tracking the latest. and he joins us, as always, from capitol hill.

good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there's a new new york marist poll that shows a majority of anthony weiner's constituents say he should not resign. but there is also a growing group of his colleagues here in congress, democrats, who say it is time for him to go. outside his lawyer's office in midtown manhattan, anthony weiner said he just wants to get back to work. >> can you tell me what you're going through now? >> look, i've betrayed a lot of people and i know it. i'm trying to get back to work now. and trying to make amends to my constituents. and of course, to my family. >> where are you headed today? >> going back to my community office to get some work done. >> reporter: getting back to work. and keeping his job. >> you're not planning on resigning? >> i'm not. >> reporter: as for his wife's pregnancy. >> what do you feel about your wife's pregnancy? >> i have no comment on that. >> do you know if it's a boy or a girl?

>> reporter: huma abedin continues to travel with secretary of state hillary clinton, departing for africa this morning on a three-country tour, thousands of miles away from the controversy back home. a list of fellow democrats calling on weiner to resign continues to grow. including representative jim matheson, who called weiner's conduct reprehensible. it demeans the u.s. congress. democrat barbara boxer stopped short of calling weiner to resign. but said, quote, from what i know about what he did, it's horrible. in fact, 56% of registered voters in weiner's district said he should not resign. compared to 33% who say he should. those who have spoken to weiner recently, say he shows no sign of wavering on the resignation issue. he has cited support in the poll. and he says his wife does not want him to resign, either. robin? george? >> that's right, jon. we'll see if he can withstand the pressure. when the rest of the members of

congress come back on monday. thanks very much. now, the case of the missing indiana college student, lauren spierer. police have hit a roadblock in the investigation, as the last person seen with lauren the night she vanished said he has no memory on how the night ended. barbara pinto is tracking this in indiana. >> reporter: lauren disappeared a week ago. we now know more about what happened at her apartment building in the early-morning hours before she vanished. but one, key witness may be of little use to police. two hours before lauren spierer vanished, surveillance cameras captured her coming home from a bar, back to her building with a friend. those cameras then captured a scuffle. now involving lauren. but between her friend, cory rossman, and another young man. >> he was punched in the face. we don't know who. why, what was said. but that punch or punches caused him a temporary memory loss.

>> reporter: rossman, according to his lawyer, doesn't remember lauren walking him back to his apartment down the street. she vanished an hour later. last seen, just three blocks from her home. investigators searched rossman's car and cell phone records. they also questioned lauren's long-time boyfriend. her friends know him well. >> he's the most loving boyfriend you could ask for. he really cares about her. lauren was his life. number one priority. he would never do anything to hurt her. >> reporter: investigators say there are at least ten persons of interest in this case. but stress, no one has been named a suspect. >> we still have a lot of things to look at. and we're still hoping for new information. and we're still needing to look, pretty much, everywhere. >> make sure you pay attention to the creek area while you're down there, as well. >> reporter: the massive week-long search has expanded into parks, hiking trails and the county reservoir. lauren's family is hoping that a $100,000 reward will help them fight their daughter. >> we're asking that you check your own properties.

look through the fields. look through the woods. anything small could be big. so, speak up. >> reporter: searchers will be back out here today. and, george and robin, police will only say they're carrying out more search warrants and polygraph tests. they won't say much more. >> thanks, barbara. now, the rest of the headlines with josh elliott. >> good morning. we're going to begin with the massive fire in arizona, that is now threatening to cross state lines this morning. as concern grows over more heavy winds expected this weekend. nearly two dozen homes are destroyed. and our clayton sandell is in the middle of it all. >> reporter: using a dc-10 tanker in the air and firebreaks on the ground, firefighters want to stop the blaze before it reaches the tiny new mexico town of luna.

they want to prevent what happened in greer, arizona. new numbers released overnight revealed 22 homes destroyed. arizona senator, jon kyl, fears a summer home he owns there may have been one of them. 8,000 people are still evacuated from the towns of springerville and eagar. displaced pets and livestock are streaming into shelters. but for the first time, the incident commander says part of the blaze is contained. >> saturday, we can possibly look at getting the evacuees of eagar or springerville and south port, back in their homes. that's our hope. if the conditions are right over the next day and a half. >> reporter: for some anxious evacuees, there is good news. >> our houses are okay? >> i talked to jim this morning. >> awesome. awesome. thank you. >> yeah. >> that's good news. >> reporter: good news for some. but the people of luna, new mexico, are now under pre-evacuation orders. and, josh, they may be forced to leave if that fire gets dangerously close. >> we're watching the winds. clayton sandell with the latest. alabama has become the latest state to pass an

immigration law that some find tough, and others, draconian. police will be required to check the immigration status of anyone they stop whom they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. schools will also be required to check students' immigration status. and giving an illegal immigrant a ride will now be a crime. meanwhile, horrible stuff. a 5-year-old in kansas city could be facing murder charges. she's accused of dragging her 18-month-old cousin into the bathtub and drowning him to stop him from crying. and overseas, a final word from europe on what caused that massive e. coli outbreak, the worst in modern history. officials confirm, vegetable sprouts grown in germany are the culprit. 29 people died and nearly 3,000 people were sickened. and finally, here we are again. i couldn't get both my feet into my mouth. so, let's just get to the videotape, shall we? the heat, once again, failed to close it out. robin, i will say. last night was the first game we

but he would install cameras to watch them showering, dressing, or whatever. anybody getting their computer fixed, this has to be seen. also, the power, the passion, of j. hud. jennifer hudson, central park. her dynamic voice will fill the park. our summer concert series straight ahead. we begin with the most wrenching day yet of the casey anthony trial. casey anthony broke down into tears as prosecutors showed photos of her daughter's badly-decomposed remains. the judge called a stop to the proceedings, saying casey was too bad to continue. ashleigh banfield was in the courtroom in orlando. she joins us now. >> reporter: i was pretty surprised when the judge adjourned early. for the most part, everyone in court was taking the photos pretty well. and the jury, very focused. not disturbed at all by this. it seems the only person who was having trouble was casey.

casey anthony sat with her head down, her sweater pulled to her mouth, as the prosecution showed one disturbing crime scene photos after another. the judge warned the gallery what was coming. >> the next witness will testify concerning crime scene photographs. she cannot control your emotions. this will be a good time to exit after this witness testifies. >> reporter: george and cindy anthony's seats were noticeably empty. they'd been warned by the judge what was coming. for casey, it often seemed too much. she appeared pasty and weak. her attorney telling abc news, she has never seen the picture of her daughter's remains. but she heard every word in court, starting with the dramatic 911 call. >> one of my meter readers, supposedly has found a skull, right off of suburban and

chickasaw. >> reporter: caylee's remains were described in detail. >> this is an article of clothing. child's short pants. >> and this is one of the items that detectives brought in. >> correct. >> reporter: caylee's shorts, now in tattered rags. it didn't take long before casey was looking weak and flushed. she was head to her holding cell. >> miss anthony is ill. we're recessing for the day. >> reporter: if and when casey mounts a defense, those photos may be key because her lawyers say the crime scene was stage pchd but if she brings the photos back during her case in chief, will she bury her face again? the photos have generated more public interest in this case. last night, the lines began for the 50 coveted public seats.

and there were over 75 waiting to get into the courtroom, just about 2 hours ago. >> 1:00 in the morning. all right, we're joined by the rest of our trial team. nancy grace, host of "nancy grace" on hln. as well as our legal analyst here, dan abrams. dan, welcome back. the prosecution seemed to be building to this emotional high point of the trial. >> they really did. and in the courtroom, you could have heard a pin drop. there were audible gasps. people were looking at the screens of caylee's remains on them, with their mouth hanging wide-open. at one point, it appeared that tot mom began to dry heave. caylee's clothes were there. you heard ashleigh say tattered rags of shorts and a top, which completely flies in the face of her defense. that in the wee hours of the morning, she gets out of bed and

gets into the family poll. she would have had on her pajamas, not her street clothes. this totally torpedos the defense. >> i don't know if it torpedos the defense. according to the defense, it was george anthony disposing of the body. the bigger problem in my view, they're arguing that the crime scene was staged, as ashleigh was just pointing out. i don't see how that one really helps the defense, if george anthony is the one who put the body there. so, they're saying that this crime scene was staged. i don't understand exactly how that's going to help them, apart from simply trying to undermine various points in this prosecution's case. >> nancy, do you think the judge finally called a stop to the testimony after casey said she was ill. do you think her obvious emotion yesterday had any impact on the jury? >> no, i don't. their eyes were glued to the screen. as a matter of fact, she's in

sick bay this morning. and we're waiting to find out if she's going to make it to court today. >> dan, we also heard from casey anthony's brother, lee. >> we heard another account of what she had claimed happened. meaning, now, another explanation during this period before the body was found, about what happened to caylee. and while you could argue that they conceded that she lied, hearing another lie, another explanation that it was this nanny who sort of scolded casey and told her she had to take the child away, just isn't helpful to this defense to hear another account like this. >> nancy, we have about 20 seconds left. but have you seen anything in all your days in this trial? looking from the outside, there doesn't seem to be much there that's really helped the defense. >> no, not yet. but you expect that in the state's case. we'll really see, if they got anything, it will unfold in their case. >> thanks very much.
